Accessibility Statement

Stars wants this website to work for every parent, caregiver, and professional, including people with disabilities.

Our commitment

Every family deserves equal access to the information and the first step that Stars offers. We build accessibility into the code and the content of this site rather than adding an overlay.

This site is designed to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or other assistive technologies.

What this site does

  • Semantic HTML with one heading per page, clear heading order, and landmarks for the header, navigation, main content, and footer.
  • A skip-to-content link as the first focusable element on every page.
  • Keyboard access for every interactive element: menus, the FAQ, the milestone timeline, the Ask Stars panel, and the Display and Comfort dialog. Dialogs trap focus while open, close with Escape, and return focus to where you were.
  • Visible focus indicators on links, buttons, and controls, in both the day and night themes.
  • Text alternatives for meaningful images. Decorative stars and illustrations are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Color contrast of at least 4.5:1 for text and 3:1 for controls. Nothing is conveyed by color alone.
  • Reduced motion honored from your operating system setting and from the site's own control. The cursor star trail, the homepage photo slideshow, the drawing animations, and the footer scene all stop.
  • A Display and Comfort dialog, opened from a button in the footer of every page, with day or night theme, three text sizes, reduce motion, high contrast, and hide decorations. Choices are saved on your device only.
  • Text that reflows at 200% zoom and at narrow widths without horizontal scrolling. Zoom is never disabled.
  • Touch targets of at least 44 by 44 pixels for primary controls, and a sticky action bar on phones that never covers a focused control.
  • English and Spanish throughout, with the page language set for assistive technology.
  • The same help in the same place on every page: the Stars phone number in the header and the footer.
  • The online Early Start assessment request form follows the same rules: every field labeled, keyboard operation from the first step to the last, visible focus, 44-pixel targets, and English or Spanish.

Linked outside services

This site embeds nothing from other companies. It links to the Stars Assessment Center website and, from the QR code page, to a payer-approved form and information packets hosted by others. We cannot promise the accessibility of those sites. If you meet a barrier there, contact us and we will help you complete the same step by phone.

Feedback and accommodations

If you have difficulty using any part of this website, or need information in another format, please contact Stars. We welcome your feedback and will respond promptly.

  • The page or feature where you had the problem
  • A description of what happened
  • The assistive technology or browser you use, if relevant
  • Your preferred way to receive a response

Standards and ongoing review

We review this website regularly with keyboard, screen reader, and zoom testing. Accessibility is an ongoing process, not a one-time project.

For more about the standard we follow, see the WCAG 2.2 specification.
